Is the welfare and wellbeing of the indigenous population not the greatest challenge facing Australia today? Not terrorism, not global warming, not water shortages...

Are these not the kind of people that the gospel of Jesus Christ is to be spoken to and lived out towards (the poor, the oppressed the enslaved/addicted, the weak and vulnerable)?

Is this not to be at the heart of the vocation of Australian christians?

In a word: absolutely! I find it hard to read much about the plight of the aboriginal population at any one time because every time I do, it shocks me so much.
I don't think its enough for any Australian to sit back and say:
"That's dreadful, something should be done, why won't someone do something?" Let alone for us as christians to see whats going on and not do something.

The really hard question is how we can help make a difference.

Probably by supporting indigenous christians to minister to the indigenous population. That would seem to me most central.

Secondly we need to have a voice in the public debate. We should listen intently, be informed, search the scriptures and explore prevailing strategies.

Thirdly, when the opportunities arise we need christian doctors, teachers, community workers, other health professionals etc. to go and help with humility and grace.
